For whatever reason, we somehow neglected to include
liner notes for the selections on “Café Strut”. So,
without further adieu:
CAFÉ STRUT: 1) THEME FROM “NUAGES DE LA NUIT” – This little nugget is part of a 3-movement piece written expressly for The Gypsy Hombres with Chamber Orchestra, by David Sebring, Peter Hyrka, and Conni Ellisor (composer-in-residence with the Nashville Chamber Orchestra.) The world premier performance was May 1, 1999, in Nashville at the War Memorial Auditorium. 2) SMOKIN’ JOE – A little bit of bop written by guitarist Justin Thompson. 3) FREDDIE’S WALTZ – For those of you steeped in culture, you might recognize the melody. It’s a famous piece composed by Frederick Chopin, for piano: “Waltz in B minor.” 4) I’VE GOT RHYTHM – What can we say? Gotta have some Gershwin… 5) MANOIR DE MES REVES – A most beautiful melody written by the famous gypsy guitarist himself, Django . 6) CAFÉ STRUT – Some original gypsy music here, and also the title cut. 7) MUTHA’S HELPA – And for those of you who can remember the ‘60’s, this is from the Jagger/Richards catalogue. 8) GUMSHOE BOOGIE – Coming right out of Mutha’s Helpa is another Hombres original. Kind of like our take on a “Harlem Nocturne,” or something. 9) KAVAKEEN-O -- Yea, we know - it looks like it says “HavaHeen-o” on the package, due to the funny little type. But this is an actual Brazilian folk tune with the real name of “Apanhei-te Cavaquinho.” It’s just easier to say “KavaKeen-o.” 10) DANCE OF THE HUNGRY – Ok, so we’re not trying to fool anyone here. Yes, this is our version of “Brahm’s Hungarian Dance #5.” Liner
